I. Genealogy of Yitschaq & The Buying of  Esav’s Birthright... 19-34

Genesis 25: 19  This is the genealogy of Yitschaq,  Avraham's son. Avraham begot Yitschaq.

20  Yitschaq  was forty years old when he took Revekah as wife, the daughter of Bet-u-el the Syrian (Ar-am-mee) of Padan Aram, the sister of La-ban the Syrian. (Revekah  hqAb4ra = noose)

Bet-u-el = Of a man god or Man of God            Syrian or Aramean = ar_am_mee'  = "exalted"

            Padan_aram = pad_dan' -ar-am = "field or plain of Ar-am"

21  Now Yitschaq pleaded with the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD granted his plea, and Revekah his wife conceived.

22  But the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If all is well, why am I like this?" So she went to inquire of the LORD.

23  And the LORD said to her: "Two nations are in your womb, Two peoples shall be separated from your body; One people shall be stronger than the other, And the older shall serve the younger."

Malachi 1:2-3:  "I have loved you," says Adonai. "Yet you say, `In what way have You loved us?' Was not E-sav Ya-a’cov's brother?" Says Adonai. "Yet Ya-a’cov I have loved; But Esav I have hated, And laid waste his mountains and his heritage For the jackals of the wilderness." . . . also in Rom 9:13)

24  So when her days were fulfilled for her to give birth, indeed there were twins in her womb.

25  And the first came out red. He was like a hairy garment all over; so they called his name Esau (E-sav = Hariy   VWafe.  He is also known as Ed-om = Red  Mdox$ )

26  Afterward his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esav's heel; so his name was called Jacob (Ya-a’cov = Heel holder  bqof3y1). Yitschaq was sixty years old when she bore them.

27  So the boys grew. And Esav was a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Ya-a’cov was a mild man, dwelling in tents.

28  And Yitschaq loved Esav because he ate of his game, but Revekah loved Yacov.

29  Now Ya-a’cov cooked (zuwd/ze’ed = boil up)  a stew (naw_ze’ed' = boiled food); and Esav came in from the field, and he was weary.

30  And Esav said to Ya-a’cov, "Please feed me with that same red (ad-om )  stew, for I am weary." Therefore his name was called Edom.  (Ed-om = Red  Mdox$ )

31  But Ya-a’cov said, "Sell me your birthright as of this day."

32  And Esav said, "Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?"

33  Then Ya-a’cov said, "Swear to me as of this day." So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Ya-a’cov.

34  And Ya-a’cov gave Esav bread and stew of lentil (MywidAf3   Ada-sh-im = lentils).

II. Yitschaq Family Moves to Ger-ar... 1-14

Genesis 26:  1 ¶ There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Avraham. And Yitschaq went to Abi-melech king of the Philistines (pel-ish-tim = "immigrants"), in Ger-ar ("a lodging place").

2  Then the LORD appeared to him and said: "Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you. (Mits-ra-yim,  root = to restrain as in distressed or  as in bondage).

3  "Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Avraham your father.

 4  "And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;

5  "because Avraham 1obeyed My voice (kole) and 2kept My 3charge, My 4commandments, My 5statutes, and My 6laws."

1 Shamea = hear                        2 Shamar = keep/guard                        3 Mish-me-ret = or custody/customs

4 Mits-vot= or precepts = not to done                     5 Chuq-qot = that which is established

 6 Torah/To-rot = teachings, instructions, doctrines, laws.

Note: (7/66> Justice,  Blasphemy,  Idolatry,  Sexual immorality,  Homicide,  Theft,  Eating animal limbs)

6  So Yitschaq dwelt in Ger-ar (a lodging place).

7  And the men of the place asked about his wife. And he said, "She is my sister"; for he was afraid to say, "She is my wife," because he thought, "lest the men of the place kill me for Revekah, because she is beautiful to behold."

8  Now it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abi-melech king of the Philistines (pel-ish-tim = "immigrants) looked through a window, and saw, and there was Yitschaq, showing endearment to Revekah his wife.

9  Then Abi-melech called Yitschaq and said, "Quite obviously she is your wife; so how could you say, `She is my sister'?" And Yitschaq said to him, "Because I said, `Lest I die on account of her.'"

10  And Abi-melech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the people might soon have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us."

11  So Abi-melech charged all his people, saying, "He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death."

12  Then Yitschaq sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the LORD blessed him.

 13  The man began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous;

14  for he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great number of servants. So the Pel-ish-tim envied him.

III.  Yitschaq Digs Wells, the Pel-ish-tim take them... 15-23

15  Now the Pel-ish-tim had stopped up all the wells which his father's servants had dug in the days of Avraham his father, and they had filled them with earth.

16  And Abimelech said to Yitschaq, "Go away from us, for you are much mightier (at-sam  numerous) than we."

17  Then Yitschaq departed from there and pitched his tent in the Valley of Ger-ar, and dwelt there.

18  And Yitschaq dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Avraham his father, for the Pel-ish-tim had stopped them up after the death of Avraham. He called them by the names which his father had called them.

19  Also Yitschaq's servants dug in the valley, and found a well of running water there.

20  But the herdsmen of Ger-ar quarreled with Yitschaq's herdsmen, saying, "The water is ours." So he called the name of the well E-sek, because they quarreled with him.

21  Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one also. So he called its name Sit-nah (Strife).

22  And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Re-hovot (streets), because he said, "For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land."

IV.  Abimelech makes a Treaty with Yitschaq... 23-32

23  Then he went up from there to Beer-sheva (Beer = Well;  Sheva = Seven).

24  And the LORD appeared to him the same night and said, "I am the God of your father Avraham; do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for My servant Avraham's sake."

25  So he built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD, and he pitched his tent there; and there Yitschaq's servants dug a well.

26  Then Abi-melech came to him from Ger-ar with Ahuz-zat, (possession) one of his friends, and Phi-col (strong voice/mouth of all) the commander of his army.

27  And Yitschaq said to them, "Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?"

28  But they said, "We have certainly seen that the LORD is with you. So we said, `Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a covenant with you,

29  `that you will do us no harm, since we have not touched you, and since we have done nothing to you but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the LORD.'"

30  So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.

31  Then they arose early in the morning and swore an oath with one another; and Yitschaq sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

V.  Yitschaq's servants Dig a Seventh Well... 32-33

32  It came to pass the same day that Yitschaq's servants came and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, "We have found water."

33  So he called it Shevah (seven/pronoun for a well). Therefore the name of the city is Beersheva (seven wells) to this day.

VI.  E-sav marries two Hittite women... 34-35

34  When Esav was forty years old, he took as wives Ye-hu-dit (Jewish) the daughter of Beeri (My well) the Hittite (offspring of  terror), and Bas-mat (sweet smell) the daughter of E-lon (Oak) the Hittite.

35  And they were a grief of mind to Yitschaq and Revekah.

VII.  Revekah Plots For Yitschaq to Deceive Esav ... 1-17

Genesis 27: 1  Now it came to pass, when Yitschaq was old and his eyes were so dim that he could not see, that he called Esav his older son and said to him, "My son." And he answered him, "Here I am."

2  Then he said, "Behold now, I am old. I do not know the day of my death.

3  "Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me.

4  "And make me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before I die."

5  Now Revekah was listening when Yitschaq spoke to Esav his son. And Esav went to the field to hunt game and to bring it.

6  So Revekah spoke to Ya-a’cov her son, saying, "Indeed I heard your father speak to Esav your brother, saying,

7  `Bring me game and make savory food for me, that I may eat it and bless you in the presence of the LORD before my death.'

8  "Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to what I command you.

9  "Go now to the flock and bring me from there two choice kids of the goats, and I will make savory food from them for your father, such as he loves.

10  "Then you shall take it to your father, that he may eat it, and that he may bless you before his death."

11  And Ya-a’cov said to Revekah his mother, "Look, Esav my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth_skinned man.

12  "Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be a deceiver to him; and I shall bring a curse on myself and not a blessing."

13  But his mother said to him, "Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for me."

14  And he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and his mother made savory food, such as his father loved.

15  Then Revekah took the choice clothes of her elder son Esav, which were with her in the house, and put them on Ya-a’cov her younger son.

16  And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.

17  Then she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Ya-a’cov.

VIII.  Ya-a’cov Deceives  Yitschaq to Get E-sav’s Firstborn Blessing... 18-29

18  So he went to his father and said, "My father.` And he said, "Here I am. Who are you, my son?"

19  Ya-a’cov said to his father, "I am Esav your firstborn; I have done just as you told me; please arise, sit and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me."

20  But Yitschaq said to his son, "How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?" And he said, "Because the LORD your God brought it to me."

21  Then Yitschaq said to Ya-a’cov, "Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esav or not."

22  So Ya-a’cov went near to Yitschaq his father, and he felt him and said, "The voice is Ya-a’cov's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esav."

23  And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esav's hands; so he blessed him.

24  Then he said, "Are you really my son Esav?" He said, "I am."

25  He said, "Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son's game, so that my soul may bless you." So he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank.

26  Then his father Yitschaq said to him, "Come near now and kiss me, my son."

27  And he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said: "Surely, the smell of my son Is like the smell of a field Which the LORD has blessed.

28  Therefore may God give you Of the dew of heaven, Of the fatness of the earth, And plenty of grain and wine.

29  Let peoples serve you, And nations bow down to you. Be master over your brethren, And let your mother's sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, And blessed be those who bless you!"

IX. Esav Discovers He’s Been Cheated... 30-41

Genesis 27: 30  Now it happened, as soon as Yitschaq had finished blessing Ya-a’cov, and Ya-a’cov had scarcely gone out from the presence of Yitschaq his father, that Esav his brother came in from his hunting.

31  He also had made savory food, and brought it to his father, and said to his father, "Let my father arise and eat of his son's game, that your soul may bless me."

32  And his father Yitschaq said to him, "Who are you?" So he said, "I am your son, your firstborn, Esav."          33  Then Yitschaq trembled exceedingly, and said, "Who? Where is the one who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it before you came, and I have blessed him__and indeed he shall be blessed."

34  When Esav heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, "Bless me__me also, O my father!"

35  But he said, "Your brother came with deceit and has taken away your blessing."

36  And Esav said, "Is he not rightly named Ya-a’cov? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!" And he said, "Have you not reserved a blessing for me?"

37  Then Yitschaq answered and said to Esav, "Indeed I have made him your master, and all his brethren I have given to him as servants; with grain and wine I have sustained him. What shall I do now for you, my son?"

38  And Esav said to his father, "Have you only one blessing, my father? Bless me__me also, O my father!" And Esav lifted up his voice and wept.

39  Then Yitschaq his father answered and said to him: "Behold, your dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth, And of the dew of heaven from above.

40  By your sword you shall live, And you shall serve your brother; And it shall come to pass, when you become restless, That you shall break his yoke from your neck."

41  So Esav hated Ya-a’cov because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esav said in his heart, "The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Ya-a’cov."

Note: Obadiah 1:18  The house of Yacov shall be a fire, And the house of Yo-seph a flame; But the house of Esav shall be stubble; They shall kindle them and devour them, And no survivor shall remain of the house of Esav," For the LORD has spoken.

X. Revekah Plots to Send Ya-a’cov To Her Brother... 42-46

Genesis 27:  42  And the words of Esav her older son were told to Revekah. So she sent and called Ya-a’cov her younger son, and said to him, "Surely your brother Esav comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you.

43  "Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: arise, flee to my brother La-ban (white) in Ha-ran (dry place).

44  "And stay with him a few days, until your brother's fury turns away,

45  "until your brother's anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereaved also of you both in one day?"

46  And Revekah said to Yitschaq, "I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth; if Ya-a’cov takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, like these who are the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?"

XI. Ya-a’cov  is Sent Away to Laban’s Home & Esav Takes Another Wife... 1-9

Genesis 28:   1  Then Yitschaq called Ya-a’cov and blessed him, and charged him, and said to him: "You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Ce-na-an.

2  "Arise, go to Pad_dan' -aram (plain of Ar-am), to the house of Beth-u-el your mother's father; and take yourself a wife from there of the daughters of La-ban your mother's brother.

 3  "May God Almighty bless you, And make you fruitful and multiply you, That you may be an assembly of peoples;

4  And give you the blessing of Avraham, To you and your descendants with you, That you may inherit the land In which you are a stranger, Which God gave to Avraham."

5  So Yitschaq sent Ya-a’cov away, and he went to Pad-dan-aram, to La-ban the son of Beth-u-el the Syrian (ar_am_mee), the brother of Revekah, the mother of Ya-a’cov and Esav.

6  Esav saw that Yitschaq had blessed Ya-a’cov and sent him away to Pad-dan-aram to take himself a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, "You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Ce-na-an,"

7  and that Ya-a’cov had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Pad-dan-aram.

8  Also Esav saw that the daughters of Ce-na-an did not please his father Yitschaq.

9  So Esav went to Ish-ma-el and took 1Ma-ha-lat the daughter of Ish-ma-el, Avraham's son, the sister of 2Neb-a-yot, to be his wife in addition to the wives he had.

 1 Ma-ha-lat = String instrument =  tlaH3ma               2 Neb-a-yot = High places =  tOybAn4

Haftatah

Malachi 1:    1  The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi.

 2  "I have loved you," says the LORD. "Yet you say, `In what way have You loved us?' Was not Esau Jacob's brother?" Says the LORD. "Yet Jacob I have loved;

3  But Esau I have hated, And laid waste his mountains and his heritage For the jackals of the wilderness."

4  Even though Edom has said, "We have been impoverished, But we will return and build the desolate places," Thus says the LORD of hosts: "They may build, but I will throw down; They shall be called the Territory of Wickedness, And the people against whom the LORD will have indignation forever.

5  Your eyes shall see, And you shall say, `The LORD is magnified beyond the border of Israel.'

6  "A son honors his father, And a servant his master. If then I am the Father, Where is My honor? And if I am a Master, Where is My reverence? Says the LORD of hosts To you priests who despise My name. Yet you say, `In what way have we despised Your name?'

7  "You offer defiled food on My altar. But say, `In what way have we defiled You?' By saying, `The table of the LORD is contemptible.'

8  And when you offer the blind as a sacrifice, Is it not evil? And when you offer the lame and sick, Is it not evil? Offer it then to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you favorably?" Says the LORD of hosts.

9  "But now entreat God's favor, That He may be gracious to us. While this is being done by your hands, Will He accept you favorably?" Says the LORD of hosts.

10  "Who is there even among you who would shut the doors, So that you would not kindle fire on My altar in vain? I have no pleasure in you," Says the LORD of hosts, "Nor will I accept an offering from your hands.

11  For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the nations," Says the LORD of hosts.

12  "But you profane it, In that you say, `The table of the LORD is defiled; And its fruit, its food, is contemptible.'

13  You also say, `Oh, what a weariness!' And you sneer at it," Says the LORD of hosts. "And you bring the stolen, the lame, and the sick; Thus you bring an offering! Should I accept this from your hand?" Says the LORD.

14  "But cursed be the deceiver Who has in his flock a male, And takes a vow, But sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished. For I am a great King," Says the LORD of hosts, "And My name is to be feared among the nations.

Malachi 2: 1  "And now, O priests, this commandment is for you.

2  If you will not hear, And if you will not take it to heart, To give glory to My name," Says the LORD of hosts, "I will send a curse upon you, And I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have cursed them already, Because you do not take it to heart.

3  "Behold, I will rebuke your descendants And spread refuse on your faces, The refuse of your solemn feasts; And one will take you away with it.

4  Then you shall know that I have sent this commandment to you, That My covenant with Levi may continue," Says the LORD of hosts.

5  "My covenant was with him, one of life and peace, And I gave them to him that he might fear Me; So he feared Me And was reverent before My name.

6  The law of truth was in his mouth, And injustice was not found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and equity, And turned many away from iniquity.

7  "For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge, And people should seek the law from his mouth; For he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.

8  But you have departed from the way; You have caused many to stumble at the law. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi," Says the LORD of hosts.

9  "Therefore I also have made you contemptible and base Before all the people, Because you have not kept My ways But have shown partiality in the law."
